"Cannot open this item" error on recurring appointment

Environment is Exchange 2010 SP2 & Outlook 2010 SP1.

When a user tries to open a recurring appointment on a shared calendar by selecting "Open this occurrence" they receive an error that says, "Cannot open this item".

If the user selects "Open the series" the appointment opens just fine.

The permissions on the calendar are Default: Author. If I change the permission to Default: Editor they do not get the error but I do not what them to have editor permissions.

I found a KB article about a similar issue but it was for Outlook 2007.

When opening an occurrence of a meeting series, you need write access in order to create the exception item. Because the user with Author permissions does not have write access to this meeting, he gets an error.  When opening the series (or an exception item of the series), the user does not need write access, and is able to open and view the entire series (because he has Full Details read permissions).

Workaround would be to give the user Editor permissions.

Additional Information
Previous Outlook versions simply open the series as read-only and do not give the option to open an occurrence. (Confirmed with Outlook 2007.)

Surely there is a patch to make it behave the same as Outlook 2007???

Try to install Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8

By the way, please also try to launch Outlook in safe mode to check if the error still pop-up. I've heard some Email Scanner addin may cause that. ("Outlook.exe /safe")

Sorry, my fault. Try to install Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) from here:

Can you reproduce this behavior via OWA? If yes, try to move the mailbox to another data store to check the result.

Hello, any update?

The error does not occur in OWA. I believe it to be an Outlook 2010 issue.

As my initial response,  this is current by design. In Outlook 2010, workaround would be to give the user Editor permissions only. We may wait and see if it would be fixed in next package released. Thanks.

(In Outlook 2013, this behavior is normal.)

I've received this error with a few users in our environment after switching to a hosted exchange solution. One quick thing to try if it's not happening to all users on your network is to switch the time zone on the machine, apply it, then switch it back and try again. I only got the idea after checking OWA and when it worked in there I ended up checking the calendar settings in OWA which were giving me time zone/work week errors.

I manage multiple shared calendars in outlook 2013. When I try to open one of the member's calendar which has recurring appointment, it shows error, "Cannot open this item"? Has anyone seen this issue? Btw, it only happens when selecting single occurrence, if I select entire series, I am able to open it. Thanks in advance.

This does not occur on OWA and I have made sure permissions are set correctly. Why can't I open just the single occurrence?
